About us

What is South Knighton Community Events?

It is a social group in South Knighton that has been going for three years. It was set up by a small group of local residents early in 2007 to organise social events at Holbrook Memorial Hall. Since then events have taken place every month.

Who can go to the events?

The events are open to all local residents and are an

opportunity to meet your neighbours.

When do these take place?

The first Saturday in the month at 7.30pm.

What sort of events?

Events have been as varied as possible in order to attract a wide range of people and to cater for the varying ages and interests of those who live in the area.

Some of the events so far have been: quizzes, wine tastings, films, jazz and music evenings, gardening and environmental events, talks by local people on local history, astronomy, and in several years there has been a New Year’s Eve party at the hall. These are all well attended and have had numbers varying from about thirty to eighty people.

How much does it cost?

The cost of an evening depends on how much it costs to pay for the event including the hire of the hall. Usually entrance fees are between £2 - £6 per person.

In 2009, the group made a successful bid for money from the Community Cohesion fund. This was used to buy equipment to show films at some of the events.

Money was also invested in a share of the Leicester Transition apple press. This is available for our community to use in the autumn to make fresh apple juice made with local donated fruit or windfalls.

Look out for posters and emails for more information on these developments.

Can anyone arrange an event?

There is a small committee, which meets to plan the diary of events, arrange the publicity, the booking of the hall and organise equipment for the evening. People who are local to the area have presented or been involved in the planning of some of the events. In the future we hope to arrange an evening on classical music, art, local history as well as events to attract younger people. Help is needed to do this so if you have an interest in these areas or any other topic we would welcome your involvement. Please contact us as we are always looking for subjects for

the evenings.

How can I find out more?

Look out for posters in the South Knighton Road newsagents, Knighton Corner shop and on telegraph poles or just come along. If you would like to be on our email list we will inform you of future events: skce@southknighton.com
